#Sports# Ronaldo Claim European Player of the Year Award

The Portuguese superstar topped a poll by 54 European journalists ahead of Germany’s Fifa World Cup winner Manuel Neuer and the Netherlands winger Arjen Robben.

“I’ve worked hard for this award, I am very happy, I thank all my team, because without that kind of team individual awards couldn’t exist,” said the 29-year-old, after receiving his award from UEFA chief Michel Platini.

The reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or holder is the fourth person to win the award, after Franck Ribery, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi.

Bayern Munich and French midfielder Ribery beat Messi and Ronaldo to the prize last year.

Ronaldo helped Real Madrid record a tenth Uefa Champions League triumph last season, scoring 17 times to break the record for the highest tally of goal by any player in a Champions League season.

“It was amazing, something that Madrid had looked to do for many years,” said the x-Manchester United forward. “As Madrid players we feel as though you have to win the Champions League. It was a fantastic season – we won the Champions League, the Spanish Cup and the (UEFA) Super Cup.”

Attacking midfielder Naddine Kessler won the women’s award ahead of Wolfburg team-mates Nilla Fischer of Sweden and fellow German Martina Muller.

Kessler, 26, topped the vote of a jury of 12 journalists to succeed Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, who claimed the inaugural award last year.
