#Somalia# Reports indicate American jihadi killed

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A member of al-Shabab says American jihadist Omar Hammami was killed in an ambush in Somalia's southern Bay region.

A U.S. terrorism expert who studies Somalia's al-Qaida-linked terror group, J.M. Berger of Intelwire.com, said Thursday that reports of the death are "very likely true" based on the sources he sees online. Berger said "credible jihadi sources" have never reported Hammami dead before, though Somali government officials have.

The al-Shabab member who described Thursday's killing to The Associated Press gave his name as Sheik Abu Mohammed.

Hammami was allegedly ordered killed by al-Shabab's top leader, with whom Hammami had a falling out. Hammami posted photos in April after being wounded by a "Shabab assassin."

The U.S. in March announced a $5 million reward for Hammami's capture.
