A 14-year-old Alabama boy is alive — and largely unscathed — after falling 100 feet from a ledge Wednesday evening. The teen was hiking with a group in the Altoona woods when he slipped and fell down a steep embankment around 8 p.m., but he was alert and talking after the rescue early Thursday morning, according to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office.
Natalie Barton, the spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, told CBS 42 that the high angle rescue teams from Oneonta and the Boaz Fire Departments were invaluable in helping save the boy. The teams used a pulley system and harness to get him in a basket and hoist him back up 100 feet.
The rescue lasted until 2 a.m. and the boy was taken to a local hospital.
