Southampton have announced the signing of Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama from Celtic on a four-year contract. The Saints have not disclosed the fee they have paid Celtic, where Wanyama had played for the past two seasons but it is thought to be around £12.5m.
With the long negotiation dragging on, the Kenyan Football Federation (KFF) opened the lid on the transfer when they congratulated the Harambee Stars’ captain on their official website.
“Finally it has happened and we’ve come to the end (of negotiations), so I am delighted,” Wanyama told the Southampton website.
“There were other options but Southampton is a club with ambitions so I chose to came here.”
“Southampton is a good club and it has good players, so I just want to train hard and work hard to be a part of the starting side. We’ll see where that will take me.”
Wanyama joined Scottish club Celtic in 2011 from Beerschot AC for £900,000, becoming the first ever Kenyan to play in the SPL.
He was instrumental to Celtic’s Champions League campaign last season as his opening goal against Barcelona helped the Scottish champions shock the Spanish giants 2-1 at Celtic Park.
He made his international debut in a friendly match against Nigeria in May 2007 and has gone on to feature 25 times for Harambee Stars, scoring just a goal.
